A BRIGHTSPACE
MINUTE

April 12, 2024: How are Students Doing?

In this Brightspace Minute, we're looking at a few ways you can access data about how your students are doing in your course. We've previously sent out Brightspace Minutes about gathering data by Tracking Progress and the Class Progress tool. Instead, this Minute focuses on statistics for Quizzes, Discussion, and the Grade Book.

Quiz Statistics

One of the tabs you'll see when you go to the Quizzes page is "Statistics." At a glance, it shows what the average grade is for each quiz. Clicking on a specific quiz takes you to a page with tabs for user stats, question stats, and even question details. The question data can help you see what students need more help with.

Discussion Statistics

There's a Statistics tab in the Discussion area, too. This gives you a quick overview of how many times students have posted, replied, or even read a post. If you click on a specific student, you get more refined data about their interaction in discussions.

Grade Statistics

In the Grade Book, if you click on the down-arrow at the top of a column, you'll see a link to statistics. This gives a basic overview of the stats for that item, and clicking on the "User Statistics" tab reveals more details about each student's grade. This is how you can view overall stats for an assignment, since there's no statistic tab within the Assignments tool. (Alternatively, if you use a Rubric with an Assignment, useful data can be found by clicking the drop down arrow next to each Rubric to see the link for Statistics.)
