Houghton, Mifflin Co.,
Boston, Mass.

Gentlemen:

I have giving careful consideration to your letter of November 28th in which you offer me the plates of my novel, "The Old Grey Homestead," for $350.38.

I realize that according to the contract provisions, you are entitled to charge me one-half of the original price of the plates. In view of the fact, however, that you not only advised me several years ago that he novel in question was out of print, but also inti-ated at the same time that you did not ever intended to reprint it, it would appear that the plates have entirely lost their value to you except as old metal. Under these circumstances, I am venturing to ask whether you would not consider selling them to me for a little more than they would bring if they were solid as such, say $175.

I may perhaps add that this is the price at which the plates of a novel published after "The Old Grey Homestead," and costing more to print, hae been offered to me; and that I am informed from several publishing sources that such an arrangement is very general.

May I also call your attention to my present address? Your recent letter was much delayed in reaching me and the arrival of your reply would be greatly expedited if you send it to me at 1509 Sixteenth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.

Hoping for a favorable reply, I am
Very truly yours,
FPK/AP
