This fall, we’re focusing on equity-minded teaching, highlighting An Evolving Framework for Inclusive and Equitable Pedagogy, developed in partnership with Writing in the Disciplines.

We welcome wide engagement with the concepts in the Framework, so we invite you to email us with your questions, comments, or stories about how you connect these principles with your work.

This semester, we’ll focus on the Framework's five principles:

  1. Foster a sense of belonging for all students and instructors
  2. Make learning goals clear and transparent
  3. Lower barriers to success
  4. Cultivate equity in the curriculum and the classroom
  5. Learn through critical reflection

Fostering a sense of belonging

This first principle of the Framework recognizes that courses are intellectual, social, and emotional experiences, and that instructors and students create the learning environment together. Social and racial identities affect how courses unfold, and a foundation of shared respect and trust is essential for navigating the complexity and uncertainty inherent in education. A sense of belonging is created out of connections with peers and others; it supports persistence through challenges and cultivates engagement.
