A BRIGHTSPACE
MINUTE

May 22: What about Blackboard?

In this final Brightspace Minute of the spring semester, we're, ironically, discussing Blackboard. Our access to Blackboard ends on September 8, 2023, so there might be things you want to save that won’t be automatically migrated. (Note: "Migrated" means that a course is copied by ETS from Blackboard into Brightspace without student data.)

WHAT BLACKBOARD COURSES ARE BEING MIGRATED?

If you want to save any course material from Summer '21 or earlier, you will need to create (and download) an export file of that course in Blackboard. Here’s how to export a Blackboard course and import it into a Brightspace sandbox. (Note: both migrated courses or courses you've manually imported to Brightspace contain content only. No student data is included.)

Please visit the Brightspace Implementation site for more info on course migrations.

WHAT ABOUT STUDENT DATA?

Blackboard student data (and content) from Spring 2020 to Summer 2023 will be archived until 2027. These archives are different from the “export packages” that you are familiar with, and retrieval of archived data will not be self-service. So, if you anticipate needing immediate access to content or grades, then it’s a good idea to manually save this data. (Note: Because this is protected student data, it should be stored securely.)
