April 5, 2024: Bulk Grade Unsubmitted Work

Because we're nearing the end of the semester, we decided to share a handy tip this week about how to easily sort and grade unsubmitted quizzes or assignments. This can be especially helpful with large enrollment classes.

Before proceeding, make sure you've graded all submitted work. The next steps allow you to filter out the students who haven't submitted an assignment or other assessment, and with a couple of clicks, assign 0s to all of them or mark some/all students as exempt.

(This may look like a lot of steps, but after doing it a few times, we promise it'll be a breeze!)

  1. In the Gradebook, click the down-arrow at the top of the column you want to grade, and choose "Enter Grades"
  2. In the Users section, click "Show Search Options" (if they're not already showing, since it remembers the last state you chose)
  3. Select the "Score" box and, then (oddly!) you have to choose the correct Grade Item (column title) from the drop down list being sure that it matches the column you're currently grading.
    1. In the next field that appears, change the setting to "=" (equal to)
    2. Leave the percent field blank
    3. Click the magnifying glass icon in the search box above
  4. Scroll down to see all the students with no grade, and select all by checking the box on the top-left of the student list
  5. To give 0s, click "Set Grades" just above that box and, in the pop-up window, enter 0 and click "Save."
  6. To exempt some students for this assessment, select them and choose "Exempt."
  7. Click "Save and Close"
