Letter from Consuelo N. Bailey to Marion E. Martin
1
I have your letter about Vermont withdrawing from the National Federation. The action of the women was final and very definite. Doubtless, if you had been at the meeting, I am sure you would have felt that that was what they intended it to be. As I told you last winter the women felt they were getting nothing from the Federation, at least nothing commensurate with the expense. None of our women have ever attended any of the meetings except Mrs. Jeffrey, who attended one Board meeting in Washington, where she happened to be because she was in Washington at the time of the meeting. As I recall it, she was visiting relatives there, or something of that sort.
As you know we have only one club, which is the Women's Republican Club of Vermont. Consequently, the action which was taken in Rutland covers the only unit which we have within the State.
At the time we joined the Federation there was opposition from quite a few of the women and those women never did feel that we were justified in joining the National group when we did.
However, was far as I am concerned, of course, if you wish to come to Vermont to talk the matter over, you are more than welcome, but knowing as I do, the way women feel about the Federation, I honestly think it would be effort spent uselessly.
Not to change the subject, but will you tell me what the practice is generally in the other States about members of the National Committee attending the State Committee meetings? Here we have always done this and have no vote.
I hope you have a very good change and rest from Washington.
