Dawn Redwood : The Future of the Dawn Redwood

Dawn Redwood

Cruiser. (2010). Dawn Redwood in PAN Botanical Garden, Warsaw, Poland

The dawn redwood still faces a high probability of extinction within the near future. The problem does not lie in the trees' abilities to survive in harsh environments, but instead in its' abilities to reproduce successfully in nature. Seed banks and research facilities have collected many seeds and cuttings from existing dawns, however, and further attempts to spread Metasequoia glyptostroboides are likely to occur in the future. For now, many trees of this species stand alone in urban landscapes around the world. Here at the University of Vermont, one such tree stands tall on the University Green, halfway around the world from its original breeding ground. This beautiful rarity carries a lot of history, but more importantly, hope for the future of the dawn redwood.
