American Basswood : UVM Campus

American Basswood - range

Geographical Range of the American Basswood (Halava)

On the UVM campus we have two types of Basswoods, Littleleaf Linden, and Silver Linden. Basswoods are commonly referred to as Linden trees and also as Lime Trees in European countries, where as Basswood is more commonly used in North America. You may be wondering why we do not have an American Basswood on campus. We actually used to have a beautiful American Basswood growing next to the Allen House, but it was taken down for various reasons. There are many local sites where American Basswoods are growing though, so they aren’t hard to find!
