Bonn, August 20, 1895

My dear Mother-

This is my birthday and it was fifteen years ago yester-day that John and I became engaged. It seems strange that on that anni-versary I should have arrived in Bonn in memory of John. TO show Frances where her father was educated and to pay our respects to his Profs. and friends. We had a letter from Fannie in Geneva written August 1st. I had written a miserable word to Avis the day before, waiting for the mail which would bring letter from America. When the letters came Mr. Hart sent one which I was five hours answering and after it I was too tired to write Fannie or anyone else. We will not have any more letters until we reach Paris as we were not sure of our dates at any particular place. When we have your letter in Paris we will write again but even so I should write you from Benn. We left Geneva Friday August 16th and reached Strassburg Germany that evening. We were comfortable there and in the morning we took a carriage and viewed the town and then went to the cathedral to see the wonderful clock there. We were also crushed with the crowd and we had to stand nearly an hour. Frances ill write you about it as I have not time. Then we took the train for Mayence and liked that city very much. The hotel faced the Rhine and right near us was several shows, merry-go-
